I trust that you're well and primed to come to our SPRING LUNCHEON on THURSDAY, 6 April 2006, at Dino's Restaurant, 3600 Castro Valley Boulevard, Castro Valley. Our get-together will commence with a Social Hour at 11:30AM; lunch will be served at 12:30PM. The Board hopes that many of you will be able to attend the luncheon which provides a wonderful opportunity to meet and catch up with old friends. It will also be the venue for: a) a stimulating and sobering account of today's pension world by our luncheon speaker, Jack Kilgour. Jack is an expert on employee benefits, and he will discuss defined benefit and defined contribution pension plans and the growing trend toward replacement of the former with the latter. California Assemblyman Keith Richman's bill, ACA 23, is a worrisome example of the trend. b) election of the officers of CSUH/EB ERFA. To assist you in preparing for the election, herewith the major responsibilities of each officer: 1. The President convenes and chairs the Board of Directors, secures luncheon speakers, works on content with the Editor of Postscripts, and represents our chapter at CSU ERFA's Fall and Spring State Council meetings. 2. The Vice President handles all the arrangements for our Fall and Spring luncheons. 3. The Secretary manages the membership data base and produces mailing labels for Postscripts. 4. The Treasurer maintains a current account of our finances and pays the bills for luncheons and Postscripts. Nominations for officers will come from the floor; if you cannot attend the luncheon but wish to nominate someone, please get in touch with one of the Board members. Report From the Academic Senate by Tom Acord In general, my serving on the AS has been as exciting as most of you might remember. Rarely does any item appear on the agenda that stirs the emotions of the Senate, but, thankfully there are still those precious few who use the Senate as a forum. I personally think its nice when passion plays a role in academia. Last November 29, the Senate was blessed with the presence of Trustee Debra Farar and Faculty Trustee Craig Smith. Wish I could say how grateful we are for their service to CSU. At the most recent Academic Senate Meeting of February 7, 2006, the Senate briefly debated and passed a resolution to clarify the role of the President in approving Emeritus Faculty serving as Principal Investigator on proposals submitted to external sponsors. President Rees said that Emeritus Faculty have always been able to serve as the PI on a wide range of proposals, but that until now, the University Procedures documents did not state that the President or the President's designee would have to approve. The Chancellors Office provided the guide lines via Executive Order 890 for this action. ERFA members would probably be most interested in the changes that have taken place on campus. Physically, the building of the College of Business and Technology Center, expansion of the University Union and a doubling of our dormitories changes the profile noticeably. The jury is still out on the name change. But the biggest change is in the leadership of the University. With a new President expected next fall, there may be a change in the positions of Provost and Deputy Provost. And of the four deans, one completes his first year (CBE) and another his third year (CLASS). On top of this, one wonders what the impact will be of the WASC review that seems to be going on forever. Certainly the expense and man (woman)-hours in responding to WASC have been enormous. In addition, enrollment is down about 7%. This will necessitate a $3 million (give or take) reduction in next year's operating budget . So, if you see any professors, pat them on the back and wish them luck. If you know a department chair or two, console them and dont mention the good old days! The current CSUEB policy on Emeritus Faculty may be found on the web at: http://www.csuhayward.edu/OAA/emeritus.pdf Obituaries Allan Temko was for many years a member of the then CSUH art department and a distinguished architectural critic who won a Pulitzer Prize in 1990 for criticism. He was a powerful voice in the Bay Area as a writer who both knew his architecture and possessed complete self-confidence in his judgments. Your Postscripts editor, for one, finds it impossible not to admire a man who could begin his review of the 1978 Pier 39 at San Francisco's Fisherman's Wharf with the words: "Corn. Kitsch. Schlock. Honky-Tonk. Dreck. Schmaltz. Merde." After serving in the Navy during World War II, Professor Temko worked briefly as a cub reporter for the Chronicle, then took a graduate degree at Berkeley, taught at the Sorbonne, and returned to the Bay Area in 1955. His best-known book and now the standard on the subject was Notre Dame of Paris. He died January 25 in the Orinda Convalescent Hospital apparently of congestive heart failure. He was 80. Former dean of the School of Education, James E. Walker, died of prostate cancer at his home in Carbondale, Illinois, on February 5. He was 64. He joined the Cal State faculty as dean in September of 1980. He retired from the then CSUH in 1988 and took the post of provost and vice president for Academic Affairs at the University of Northern Colorado. He became president of Middle Tennessee State University two years later. He moved to Southern Illinois University in Carbondale as president in July of 2000. He had been on medical leave from that post since September 2005. Nathan Rubin, known to friends and colleagues as "Nate," was one of the Bay Area's most active musicians. He performed with a number of string groups as well as the San Francisco Symphony, San Francisco Ballet, Oakland Ballet and San Jose Symphony. He also recorded solo performances of work by Leon Kirchner, Martin Rokeach and Ezra Pound. In 1963, he took over as concertmaster of the Oakland Symphony, a post he held until 2003. He joined the Cal State Music Department in 1974 and retired in 2002. He taught violin and viola, chamber ensemble, and string methods. He also founded and taught the highly-successful class in the History of Rock and Roll, for which he wrote and published his own textbook. He died at the age of 75 from a cerebral hemorrhage suffered in an accidental fall. Professor H. Duane Heath, of the Department of Biological Sciences, passed away October 16, 2005, of complications from Alzeheimer's disease. Duane was one of the "founding fathers" of the department, arriving on Cal State's first "campus" at the old Hayward High School in September of 1960. He served the department and university for thirty years including a very active partication in academic government. In addition to his biological interests, primarily in developmental biology, Duane was an enthusiastic actor in a number of productions of the Department of Theatre Arts. A memorial service was held on January 21st at the Eden United Church of Christ in Hayward. (Thanks to Ned Lyke for these comments.)
